There's something about the phrase "coming-of-age story" that makes me scowl. It makes me think of sappy stories about middle schoolers who don't bear any resemblance to actual kids and parents who don't act like people at all. I tend to avoid them, even though I like the same classics that you do (Stand By Me, The Sandlot, etc.). All that to say, I had never heard of Mud (2012) and would never have watched it if I hadn't assigned it to myself to make my White Trash video on YouTube.
And yet I loved it.
